What can I do with a major in chemistry and theatre?

Jo B asked:

I am really good at chemistry and biology and physics and math (and this is even in upper-division in college) and I LOVE to perform. I have done some form of performance ever since I was eight. What they heck can I do this? I have no idea what kinds of jobs would let me perform without making all my chemistry studying a waste of time.

Specialize in indoor pyrotechnics… it pays very well and you can use all of your training.

Check out Ashland, Oregon. The Shakespearean theatre and festivals are held here, and it is utterly beautiful. SOU, a small liberal arts college is also here, and you may have a job prospect if you are considering teaching. This location may allow you to do both! SOU also has an incredible theatre arts program. A great place to start before you move on to broadway. Good luck (especially with O Chem)!

TV or radio science presenter, perhaps? Get in touch with your local media. Ask them for advice.

Audition for mad scientist roles.

Seriously, if you want to be an actor, go on auditions. If you want to be a chemist, look for jobs related to chemistry. If you don’t need to be an actor but would like to work in the theatrical field, maybe you can put your chemistry degree to work as a special effects developer or coordinator. Or, better yet, get a nice high-paying scientific job and pursue acting as a hobby. You’ll feed your acting bug without having to wait tables to make ends meet.
