Is it okay to take organic chemistry before general chemistry?

I have no chemistry background. Do you think I could take organic chemistry before I take general chemistry, or would that be too hard?

All chemistry courses build upon themselves, so you should really take Gen Chem before tackling any of the other courses.

I would not recommend it. It is possible but most colleges won’t allow you to do so without convincing them you are capable. But, I had a six year interval between the two so… I was good at gen chem, though. With no background - take gen chem first. Unless you are a genius - then go for it.

I think you need to take general chemistry to learn the basics especially if you have no chemistry background. You won’t understand what is going on. Trust me I tired to skip Chem 1 (general chem) and go straight to chem 2 (bio/organic chem) and had no clue what was going on, it was like foreign language!

I do not recommend doing this.

There are some key things about chemistry you need to learn before you take Organic.

I’m surprised your school doesn’t require this.

NO. You cannot take ochem without taking gen chem. That’s just stupid and the chances of you dropping the class and/or failing is a lot higher, and that’d suck to have that on your transcript.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
I am currently in Organic Chemistry, and I do not recommend this. Colleges will not let you take Organic before general for a reason. You will struggle considerably in this class without a foundation of knowledge. I took General Chem 1 & 2, and Organic is still difficult. It is well-known as one of the harder subjects in college.
How can you prioritize functional groups and determine bond enthalpies on alkene chains without understanding what molecular weight, electronegativity, and Delta H is? Take General Chem. You’ll find that that class is hard enough and required anyway.

Plus the Organic Chem lab sucks if you haven’t gotten experience from general chem labs.
