What can one do with a major in Biology?

SAK asked:

What careers are available for someone who wants to get a Bachelors degree in Biology? What about a masters degree? PhD?

Do you need to get a PhD to work in a research lab?

Thant’s pretty much it.
Unless you do bio tech engineering which would provide you with more options.

You can do lots with a biology degree. You can go to med school, dental school, or pharm school. You can work at a lab with just a bachelors, but you’ll be doing a lot of the menial work. You can also get into consulting or even investment banking. With the increase in biotech firms, a lot of these places will look for people who actually understand the concepts and what not.

With the BS degree, you might be a lab assistant, in which case you’d be responsible for stuff like cleaning rat cages and disposing of dead fruit flies. You also might convince a veteranarian or an animal shelter to let you work as an animal care assistant. Maybe you could even start at a pet store and work your way up to manager. Some areas of the food business can use a BS in bio, I specifically knew of some upper-level managers of seafood departments for a supermarket chain who had some of that sort of education (then again, I knew others who didn’t).

An MS in biology would qualify you for more ambitious lab assistant duties, like actually administering variables to the test subjects. It also would qualify you to teach in a community college or perhaps at a small liberal-arts college.

The PhD would qualify you most of all for a research/grad college faculty post at a major university. You also would have a shot at research in the private sector–pharmaceuticals, biotech, etc.

You can be a biology teacher, or a lab assistant.

I agree with Charles K. I had a friend who began as a biology major and then transferred into the dental program. Many of the early courses you would take as a bio major would apply for medical school, dental school, pharmacology, and the applied biology topics. Biomedical engineering is a really hot area, but with most engineering you’ll want your masters or PhD to really compete. Biomed, FYI, might deal with creation of devices for medical reasons, such as prosthetics. I’ve also added a link for something that’s definitely available for bachelors graduates. A biomed equip technician. Instead of engineering the devices you would operate, maintain, and repair the MRI, X-ray, CT scan, etc. machines in hospitals and universities.

You can get into a lot of lab work at companies. I have a friend that works for the DEA. Med School and those areas. Also a lot of companies that in the bio field in anyway are looking for people that have degrees in that background on the sales side of things as well.
