What are the most promising fields of biology?

Saturday, April 4th, 2009 | Biology

Shift asked:

In other words, what of the following do you believe are the most competitive and relevant in current academia? Evolutionary biology? MCB? Virology? Something else?

Also, if you have been through graduate school and gotten an MA or Ph.D. can you tell me what it’s like or offer any advice?

Did you teach labs? Work with a professor on his research? Both?

How long doers one have to take the “basics” before they can really start pursuing their own research?

microbiology and medical research are the easiest to work in
Teaching labs is a pretty standard form of income for graduate students, with todays economy very few professors have money to give to pay grad students for research
I started my research the summer before my grad program started, they expect you to know basic research skills and techniques
