Christians, what makes you more knowledgeable about biology than every scientist on the planet?

Sunday, September 20th, 2009 | Biology

Andrea Guitar Heroine asked:

99.98% of the scientific community accepts the theory of evolution, and these are people who have spent their entire adult lives doing work and research and studying the work and research of others in their respective fields.

Then you, armed with a high-school education in biology or even less than that, and a thousand-year-old tome written by Bronze Age goat herders who thought the earth was flat, think you know better than they do? And then you call them elitist? Do you realize how ridiculous you sound?

I’ve never heard any Christians say that they know more about the planet than every scientist out there.

I dont know more than these scientists do….. But then again, there are many things in this world that we will never know…. even with science.

Have you asked EVERY scientist on the planet??
No. I didn’t think so. There are also Christian Scientists.
Do more OPEN-MINDED research maddam.

Wow, what an offensive rant. Nothing makes me more knowledgeable, which is why I don’t claim to know more than scientists.

Don’t expect any logical answers. Christians have faith, which they believe in firmly.

What makes a scientist more knowledgeable than God about Biology?

When God created man and Biology.

God gives man his knowledge of life and cause and effect.

Just because someone doesn’t believe in the same thing u do that doesnt make them ridiculous. The theory of evolution is after all a theory and isnt a proven 100%, for sure, fact. And just like the people who knew so long ago with 100% certainty that the world was flat, they were wrong and scientists today could be too. Really its ridiculous to call someone ridiculous for something that isn’t a proven fact.

Andrea - only a small fraction of Christians reject the discoveries of science. I think most Christians find that science, including cosmology, is another way in which God reveals Himself. The people who insist that God made the universe in six earth-days may be the loudest, at least in this country, but they aren’t a majority. Don’t judge all Christians by a few.

The premise of your statement is false.
The claim of a 99.98% agreement on anything is on it’s face an indefensible claim.
Answer me this, can one plus nothing equal more than one?
The same answer applies to the notion of the universe creating itself and life just happening all by itself.
It’s simple math, no biology required.
Perpetual motion is impossible, and that is a scientific fact.

Assuming that you are actually looking for a real answer…

Okay, once again I’m going to explain this. Scientists are not always aware of other fields of knowledge. Philosophers and artists are quite aware that science is an allegory, a metanarrative, merely a “way” of perceiving reality that has no particular advantage over the many other ways of perceiving reality. Science is in fact a 17th and 18th century, narrow, European way of thinking.
Let’s try it this way. Science claims to be based on things like “logic.” “proof,” and “evidence.” But philosophers — epistemologists who study “how” we “know” what we “know” — these philosophers understand that no one can really “prove” anything.
You cannot prove that the universe didn’t pop into existence 5 minutes ago and that all your memories aren’t fake. You cannot prove that you’re not a “brain in a vat” hooked up to a computer program that you perceive to be “reality.” What you believe, you believe by faith. What everyone believes, everyone believes by faith. As finite human creatures, there simply is no such thing as 100% total and absolute clinical technical certainty — about anything.
So people run around stuck in some 18th century mindset, claiming that they’ve “proven” something. Do you know how ridiculous that sounds?

We just refuse to be brain washed by the false education system into believing things that don’t make sense, and are called facts when it’s actually a bunch of unproven theories, relying on an endless string of innumerable and unlikely coincidence .Please look up the definition of the word fact….God bless

My problem with evolution has nothing whatsoever to do with my religion. When I was an atheist, I still thought it was a load of crap. And yes, I have university training in biology (I was pre-med). The only reason most scientists accept evolution is that nobody has yet come up with a better explanation. But it is sloppy science. Pure and simple. There are far to many assumptions serving as foundational principles for me to invest any degree of confidence in its conclusions. The so-called “proofs” of evolution are not proofs at all, but mere explications of the theory itself. There are any number of alternative explanations for virtually all of them. Beyond that, the assured findings of evolution have been discarded several times by biologists themselves. Can you say embryonic recapitulation? This was debunked in the 1920’s by science, yet it still found its way into my biology textbooks. Scientific orthodoxy is still holding evolution together, but the seams are straining. Nobody would be happier than the scientific community if a better theory could be developed.
