I am wondering if you understood your assignment correctly.

“Tagging” a deer and “collecting” a deer have different meanings regarding hunting and animal studies. In hunting, tagging the animal means attaching a paper tag to the dead animal you just collected.

In animal studies, tagging just means putting some identifying device on a live animal you have trapped and plan on letting go.

For hunters, you put your tag (actually part of your hunting license) on the animal you just shot. You tie it to an antler, ear, or leg. For animal studies, I have seen small plastic clips on ears and collars around necks.

Locations to find deer: Look for game trails, watering holes, feeding areas, scat (deer poop), bedding areas, etc. I suspect that is the same for animal studies or hunters.

For your last question: hunters will either sit at a promising location and wait for a deer to come to them, others will stalk or track animals. Once the deer is shot, you fill out the tag, attach it, and drag it off to your camp. The data recorded on the tag is usually your name, time & date the animal was shot, and the location of the kill.

Animal studies require different methods since they live trap, attach a tag to the animal, and let it loose. The data will vary according to what the study is all about. That could be life span, diease studies, herd movements, etc.
