I want to be a Forensic DNA Analyst when I get out of college. I want to major in biology but I have a huge problem. I really enjoy talking about heredity and stuff like that but for some strange reason biology is extra hard for me now that I’m in high school. Is there any possible way I can get more understanding about biology? I really want to follow my dream!!!!! Thanks.

Pick the parts that you like and find books about them, study them and read all you can about them.

Once you do this you will probably find places where they connect to other more difficult parts but now that you have read so much of what you like, the other concepts come to you much more easily.

It is all connected in some way.

Well you’re in luck because biology is not a hard science. It’s not really far out there. Most people get hung up on certain things because they just sound difficult or boring. “Deoxyribonucleic acid” just sounds complicated so most people just get intimidated by it and stop paying attention while the teacher’s talking or skim the pages of the text book.

And you are young… so relax.

Approach it this way: In each section your teacher goes over or chapter you read, outline the facts. Really think to your self, “What are the facts about this topic? What are the rules to follow?” From there you will figure out exactly what you understand and what you don’t. The next day you will ask your teacher about the things you don’t understand for clarification.

It is extremely important that you identify exactly what it is that you don’t understand and not just get overwhelmed by the topic. And always go to your teacher with SPECIFIC questions. You can’t just say you don’t understand a topic or a chapter in the book, because that is not true. The more knowledgeable you are about the what you don’t get, the more you will gain from the conversation with him or her.

If you really stick to this, by the time you get to your exam/test you will not have a problem. Everybody can understand biology if they really try.

Hope that helps
